Bishop Jose Porunnedom is the third bishop of the eparchy of Mananthavady. He was born on 13th March 1956 (Because of an error at the time of school admission all official documents bear the date as 11th November 1955) in the eparchy of Kothamangalam. In 1972 he joined the eparchial minor seminary of Tellicherry and later in 1974 he opted for the newly erected eparchy of Mananthavady and was ordained priest on 22nd December 1982 after completing priestly formation at St Joseph's Minor Seminary (Tellicherry), St Joseph's Pontifical College (Carmelgiri, Alwaye) and Universita Urbaniana (Rome). From 1986 to 1991 he was in Rome for his higher studies in Oriental Canon Law and obtained licentiate and doctorate from the Pontifical Oriental Institute. He was appointed bishop of the eparchy of Mananthavady on 18th March 2004 while he was doing ministry as the chancellor of the Majorarchipeiscopal Curia of the Syro-Malabar Church. His episcopal ordination took place on 15th May 2004 and installed on the same day.

Bishop Mar Jose Porunnedom was born at  Alacode  in  the eparchy of Kothamangalam in the civil district of  Idukki on  March 13 , 1956.  He has had his scooling at Panchayat Lower Primary School at Vettimattam (Class 1-5), St George's High School, Kalayanthany (Class 6, 8-10) and Maloth Kasba School, Vallikkadav (Class 7). His priestly formation took place at St Joseph's Minor Seminary (Tellicherry), St Joseph's Pontificial College (Carmelgiri - Alwaye) and Pontifical Urbanian University (Rome). On successful completion of the seminary formation he was ordained priest on  22nd December 1982 in his parish at Malom by Bishop Jacob Thoomkuzhy, the first Bishop of Mananthavady. As a young priest he served as assistant  parish priest  at  St Sebastian's Parish (Kottiyoor), as Vicar at St Sebastian's Parish (Santhigiri), Secretary to  Bishop  Jacob  Thoomkuzhy and Chancellor of the diocese. While serving  as  Secretary  and  Chancellor he served alos as Parish Priest of Puthusserikadav  and Thrissillery. In 1986 he was sent to Rome  where he  obtained his licentiate and Doctorate in Oriental Canon Law  from  the  Potifical Oriental  Institute. After returning from Rome in 1991 he resumed his earlier officies of secretary and chancellor and the new officie of the eparchial judge of the eparchial marriage tribunal. Simultaneously he served also as the vicar of Little Flower Parish (Kammana). In 1993 he was appointed chancellor of the Syro-Malabar Majorarchiepiscopal Curia as the Syro-Malabar Church was raised to major archiepiscopal status in 1992 and Archbishop Abraham  Kattumana was appointed as Potifical Delegate. After the demise of Archbishop Kattumana he continued in the same office under the following two major archbishops, namely Cardinal Antony Padiyara and Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil.  On  18th March 2004 he  was   appointed bishop of the eparchy of Mananthavady as the successor of Mar Emmanuel Pothanamuzhy CMI. His episcopal ordination took place on 15th May 2004 and was installed on the same day. The motto of Bishop Jose Porunnedom is "Not to be served, but to serve" (Mt. 20:28).
