IIT Kanpur
Overview:
ഇന്ത്യൻ ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റൃൂട്ട് ഓഫ് ടെക്നോളജി (IIT) എന്നത് ഉയർന്ന നിലവാരമുള്ള ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞരെയും എഞ്ചിനീയർമാരെയും സാങ്കേതിക വിദഗ്ധരെയും സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്നതിനായി ഇന്ത്യൻ ഗവണ്മെൻ്റ് തന്നെ സ്ഥാപിച്ച വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളുടെ ഒരു കൂട്ടായ്മയാണ്. ഐഐടികളുടെ ആശയം ആദ്യമായി ഉടെലെടുത്തത് 1945-ൽ ഒരു റിപ്പോർട്ടിലാണ്. അന്നത്തെ എജ്യുക്കേഷൻ ഓൺ വൈസ്രോയ്സ് എക്സിക്യൂട്ടീവ് കൗൺസിൽ അംഗമായ N.M.Sircar -ൻ്റേതായിരുന്നു ആ റിപ്പോർട്ട്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ ശുപാർശകളെ തുടർന്ന് 1950-ൽ ഖരഗ്പുരിൽ ആദ്യത്തെ ഇന്ത്യൻ ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട് ഓഫ് ടെക്നോളജി സ്ഥാപിതമായി. ഓട്ടോണോമസ് സംബ്രതായതിലുള്ള ഈ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങൾക്കെല്ലാം വെവ്വേറെ ഡയറക്ടർ ബോർഡുകളും ഉണ്ട്. ഈ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളിലേക്കുള്ള പ്രവേശനം ഒരു ജോയിൻ്റ് എൻട്രൻസ് പരീക്ഷയിലൂടെയാണ് (IIT-JEE) നടക്കുന്നത്. ഈ പരീക്ഷ രണ്ടു ഘട്ടങ്ങളിയായാണ് നടക്കുന്നത് 'IIT - Main', 'IIT - Advanced'. ഓരോ ഘട്ടങ്ങളിലും വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളെ ഫിൽറ്റർ ചെയ്യുന്നു.
ഉത്തർപ്രദേശിലെ കാൺപൂരിൽ 1959 -ലാണ് IITK സ്ഥാപിതമാകുന്നത്. തുടക്കകാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ ഹാർകോർട്ട് ബട്ട്ലർ ടെക്നോളജിക്കൽ ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റൃുട്ടിൻ്റെ കാൻ്റീൻ ബിൽഡിങ്ങിൽ ആരംഭിച്ച IITK പിന്നീട് 1963 -ആയപ്പൊളേക്കും സ്വന്തം ക്യാമ്പസ്സിലേക്കു മാറി. അച്യുത് കവിന്ദേ ആണ് ഇന്ന് കാണുന്ന 1055 ഏക്കർ ക്യാമ്പസ് ഡിസൈൻ ചെയ്തത്. ആരംഭകാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ കാൺപൂർ ഇൻഡോ-അമേരിക്കൻ പ്രോഗ്രാമിന് (KIAP) കീഴിൽ ഐഐടി കാൺപൂരിൻ്റെ ഗവേഷണ ലബോറട്ടറികളും അക്കാദമിക് പ്രോഗ്രാമുകളും സ്ഥാപിക്കാൻ ലോകത്തിലെ തന്നെ ഏറ്റവും ഉയർന്ന നിലവാരമുള്ള ഒമ്പത് യുഎസ് സർവ്വകലാശാലകൾ ഒരുമിച്ചുകൂടി ഒരു കൺസോർഷ്യം രൂപീകരിക്കുകയും വേണ്ടുന്ന സഹായ സഹകരങ്ങൾ നൽകുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇന്ത്യയിൽ തന്നെ ആദ്യമായി കമ്പ്യൂട്ടർ സയൻസ് വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം നൽകാൻ ആരംഭിച്ച സ്ഥാപനം കൂടിയാണ് IITK. 23 ഡിപ്പാർട്മെൻ്റുകളിലായി ഏകദേശം പതിനായിരത്തോളം സ്റ്റുഡൻ്റ്സും ഫാക്കൽറ്റീസും IITK യുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടു പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

- Announcements for admission to the PhD program are made twice a year typically around April or May and October or November. Please check the institute website (https://iitk.ac.in) for the announcement and details of the admission procedure.
- The typical department-specific procedures for admission to the PhD program are as follows:
- Non-sponsored, external and part-time candidates are required to appear in a written test based on mathematics. The shortlisted candidates are then called for a panel interview in their choice of specialization out of the 4 groups and 3 IDSs.
- Sponsored (By Industry / Govt. Labs) candidates may be asked to appear for a short written test in mathematics before the interview.

Admission:
- Admission to the Ph. D. programme is generally made in both semesters in a year, i.e., July and December. Selection is done through a written test followed by an interview. Industries and research organizations may also sponsor a candidate for admission to the Ph. D. program. Course requirements: The students take a minimum of six courses to develop expertise in ChE fundamentals as well as to complement their research work.

In addition, the candidate should clear a national level test (UGC-JRF/NET/GATE) in the last five years. Note it is also required that the candidate should have Mathematics as a subject in the undergraduate degree.

- Students with M. Sc. degree in Earth Science streams or B. Tech. /B. E. degree in Civil/Geosciences Engineering are eligible to apply for the M.Tech programme. Candidates having M. Sc. degree in other science streams may also be considered. In addition, a valid GATE score will be needed. The GATE requirement will be waived for the B.Tech graduates from IITs with a minimum overall CPI of 6.5 and a minimum CPI of 8.0 in the last two semesters in B.Tech. However, such students are not entitled to Institute Assistantship if the overall CPI is below 8.0.
