സമൂഹത്തെയും മറ്റ് പ്രകൃതിദത്തവും മനുഷ്യനിർമ്മിത ഘടനകളും ഭൂകമ്പങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് എങ്ങനെ സംരക്ഷിക്കാമെന്ന് സംസാരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു പഠനമാണ് ഈ കോഴ്സിലൂടെ ലക്ഷ്യമാക്കുന്നത്.ഭൂകമ്പ പ്രത്യാഘാതങ്ങളെ നേരിടാൻ കഴിയുന്ന സംവിധാനങ്ങൾ നിർമ്മിക്കുക എന്നതാണ് Earthquake Engineering കോഴ്സിൻ്റെ പ്രധാന ലക്ഷ്യം.സിവിൽ എഞ്ചിനീയറിംഗിൻ്റെ  ഒരു ഉപ ശാഖയാണിത്. സോയിൽ മെക്കാനിക്സ്, കൺസ്ട്രക്ഷൻ മാനേജ്മെൻറ് പ്രോസസ്സുകൾ, കോൺക്രീറ്റ് ടെക്നോളജി, അപ്ലൈഡ് കൺസ്ട്രക്ഷൻ പ്രോജക്ട് മാനേജ്മെന്റ്, ജിയോളജി എന്നിവ കോഴ്‌സിൽ പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്ന കുറച്ച് വിഷയങ്ങളാണ്. ഭൂകമ്പ പ്രതിരോധശേഷിയുള്ള ഘടനകളും സൗകര്യങ്ങളും എഞ്ചിനീയർമാർ ആസൂത്രണം ചെയ്യുക, രൂപകൽപ്പന ചെയ്യുക, നിർമ്മിക്കുക, കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുക എന്നീ കാര്യങ്ങൾ മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നത് വഴി  ഭൂകമ്പത്തിന്റെ അപകടം പരിഹരിക്കാൻ ഒരു പരിധി വരെ എൻജിനീയർക്ക് സാധിക്കുന്നു. ഏകദേശം 60% പ്രദേശവും ഭൂകമ്പ സാധ്യതയുള്ളതും വിവിധ അളവിലുള്ള സെൻസിറ്റീവ് സോണുകളുള്ളതുമായതിനാൽ ഈ രംഗത്ത് വളരെയധികം സാധ്യതകളുണ്ട്. വിവിധ സ്രോതസ്സുകളുടെയും സ്ഥലങ്ങളുടെയും ഡാറ്റ ശേഖരിക്കുകയും ഗവേഷണം നടത്തുകയും തുടർന്ന് ഭൂകമ്പങ്ങളെ പ്രതിരോധിക്കുന്ന ഘടനകൾ നിർമ്മിക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള പരിഹാരങ്ങൾ കണ്ടെത്തുകയും ചെയ്യുക എന്നത് Earthquake Engineer- ൻ്റെ പ്രധാന ഉത്തരവാദിത്തമാണിത്.
