Introduction

The Govt. of India declared elementary education as a basic human right of every child. The Union Government of India has taken various steps to uplift the status of women by implementing various schemes including free education for girls. In order to achieve and promote girls' education, UGC has introduced a Post Graduate Indira Gandhi Scholarship for Single Girl Child with an aim to compensate for direct costs of girl education at all levels, especially for such girls who happen to be the only girls' child in their family.

Eligibility criteria

  • Girl students without having any brothers or girl students who are twin daughters/ fraternal daughters may also apply for scholarships under the aforesaid scheme. In a family, if one son and one daughter are available then the girl child will not be considered for a scholarship under the scheme.
  • Girl students up to the age of 30 years at the time of admission in PG courses are eligible.
  • The scheme is applicable to such single girl children who have taken admitted to regular, full-time first year Masters Degree courses in any designated university or a post-graduate college. This scholarship is available to PG-I year students only.
  • Admission to PG Course in Distance education mode is not covered under the scheme.

Application process

  • The candidates fulfilling the eligibility conditions are required to apply online through www.ugc.ac.in/sgc against the advertisement to be published by the UGC once a year through advertisement in leading newspapers and Employment News after obtaining admission in the first year Post Graduate course in a recognized University/Institution/College. 
  • The results of the selection will be declared on the UGC website. 
  • Awardees would be required to download their award letter from the online portal by logging in with the registration id and Date of birth in the event of their selection. 
  • It is expected from the institutions where students have taken admitted in the first year of PG course, no tuition fees will be charged by the institute from girl students to pursue PG degree course in Universities/Colleges/Institutions
