ജവഹർലാൽ നെഹ്‌റു സർവ്വകലാശാല ഇന്ത്യയിലെ മുൻനിര സർവ്വകലാശാലയാണ്, കൂടാതെ അധ്യാപനത്തിനും ഗവേഷണത്തിനുമുള്ള ലോകപ്രശസ്ത കേന്ദ്രവുമാണ്. നാഷണൽ അസസ്‌മെന്റ് ആൻഡ് അക്രഡിറ്റേഷൻ കൗൺസിൽ (NAAC) 3.91 ഗ്രേഡ് പോയിന്റോടെ (4 എന്ന സ്‌കെയിലിൽ) ഇന്ത്യയിൽ ഒന്നാം സ്ഥാനത്തെത്തിയ ജെഎൻയു, ഇന്ത്യൻ ഗവൺമെന്റിന്റെ നാഷണൽ ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂഷണൽ റാങ്കിംഗ് ഫ്രെയിംവർക്ക് പ്രകാരം ഇന്ത്യയിലെ എല്ലാ സർവകലാശാലകളിലും മൂന്നാം സ്ഥാനത്താണ്. 2016-ൽ, 2017-ൽ രണ്ടാം സ്ഥാനവും. 2017-ൽ ഇന്ത്യൻ പ്രസിഡന്റിൽ നിന്ന് ജെഎൻയുവിന് മികച്ച യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി അവാർഡും ലഭിച്ചു.യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി ഗ്രാന്റ്‌സ് കമ്മീഷൻ (യുജിസി) യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റിയിലെ നിരവധി അക്കാദമിക് സെന്ററുകളെ 'സെന്റർ ഓഫ് എക്സലൻസ്' ആയി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ചരിത്രപഠന കേന്ദ്രം, സാമൂഹ്യ വ്യവസ്ഥകളുടെ പഠന കേന്ദ്രം, രാഷ്ട്രീയ പഠന കേന്ദ്രം, സാമ്പത്തിക പഠനത്തിനും ആസൂത്രണത്തിനും വേണ്ടിയുള്ള കേന്ദ്രം, റീജിയണൽ ഡെവലപ്‌മെന്റ് പഠന കേന്ദ്രം, സാക്കിർ ഹുസൈൻ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ പഠന കേന്ദ്രം എന്നിവയാണ് ഇവ. സ്കൂൾ ഓഫ് സോഷ്യൽ സയൻസസ്. കൂടാതെ, മൂന്ന് സയൻസ് സ്കൂളുകൾ - സ്കൂൾ ഓഫ് ഫിസിക്കൽ സയൻസസ്, സ്കൂൾ ഓഫ് ലൈഫ് സയൻസസ്, സ്കൂൾ ഓഫ് എൻവയോൺമെന്റൽ സയൻസസ് - എന്നിവയ്ക്കും യുജിസിയുടെ സെന്റർ ഫോർ എക്സലൻസ് എന്ന അംഗീകാരം ലഭിച്ചു. UGC യുടെ പ്രത്യേക സഹായ പദ്ധതിക്ക് കീഴിൽ ഡിപ്പാർട്ട്മെന്റൽ റിസർച്ച് സപ്പോർട്ടിനായി ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പഠന കേന്ദ്രം, സ്കൂൾ ഓഫ് ലാംഗ്വേജ്, ലിറ്ററേച്ചർ & കൾച്ചർ സ്റ്റഡീസ് എന്നിവയും കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ജെഎൻയുവിന് തന്നെ യുജിസി ‘യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി ഓഫ് എക്സലൻസ്’ പദവി നൽകി.
